FOUR Pembrokeshire students have completed a month-long work placement at the Port of Milford Haven as part of its annual Scholarship Scheme.

Bethan Rogers, Isabel Harries, Hannah Taylor and Guto Harries applied for the scholarships last autumn and were successful in securing £1,500 each towards their studies, plus a unique chance to experience the diverse range of activities at the UK’s top energy port.

Bethan is studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Portsmouth and spent time with the engineering division working on a project about navigational aids.

Isabel is in her final year at the Royal College of Music and worked with the marketing team looking at the Milford Waterfront Development.

Hannah is a Chemistry student who worked on a Smart Grid system, while geography graduate Guto was placed in the environmental department and learnt how a busy energy Port operates in a special area of conservation.

Guto was delighted with the experience he gained.

He said: “The month’s placement I received at the Port was absolutely invaluable, both in terms of providing an insight to a professional working environment, working on real projects in real situations, and self-development with the opportunity to apply previous learned knowledge.

"The placement is a great career boosting experience, preparing you for the future through the interview application process, the bursary and the hands on professional experience."

The initiative has been running for thirteen years, with the placement being introduced in 2010.

Anna Malloy, PR and Communications Manager at the Port of Milford Haven who oversees the scheme, said: "We are always very impressed with the standard of applications from local students and this year was no exception.

"Bethan, Isabel, Hannah and Guto all integrated well into our business and were able to experience a real taste of working life.

"Their presentations on the final day of their placements were exceptional and will contribute to the projects that our own staff are working on.

"We’d like to thank them for input and wish them all the very best for the future."

The 2016-17 Scholarship Scheme will be launched in October and online applications will be accepted via the Port’s website at www.mhpa.co.uk.
