LOCALS can find out whether a teacher from Milford Haven has been named one of ‘Britain’s Classroom Heroes 2016’ this Friday (October 30).

Last weekend, Michael Butcher, who teaches at Pembrokeshire College, attended the grand finale of the Pearson Teaching Awards, hosted by actor and comedian Hugh Dennis.

Back in June of this year, Michael was recognised for his exceptional contribution to the teaching profession as one of just 52 Silver Teaching Award winners in the UK, winning his award in the category The Award for FE Lecturer of the Year.

On Sunday, he found out whether he had bagged another teaching award, also known as the Golden Plato award.

Michael has been praised for the 'life-enhancing' effects he has had on students and their families.

"The rapport that he builds with his learners is based on trust, compassion and total acceptance," an awards spokesman said.

"Through a truly unique approach to teaching Mike is able to connect with learners with a varied range of physical and learning disabilities.

"Through building learner’s trust he allows them to achieve a level of riding ability, skills and knowledge and to achieve industry recognised qualifications that many of the learners and their families would have believed to be beyond their grasp.

"Throughout his teaching career Mike’s commitment to both his learners and his profession has been unparalleled."

The awards will be broadcast on BBC 2 this Friday at 6pm.

Actor and comedian Hugh Dennis, host of this year’s BBC Classroom Heroes said: “I am genuinely proud and honored to be hosting this year’s ceremony. The inspiration and support of my fantastic teachers got me to where I am today, and I look forward to joining in and celebrating other teachers’ incredible achievements as well.”

Rod Bristow, President of Pearson UK, said: “A huge congratulations to the 2016 Teaching Award winners. Pearson is so proud to sponsor this celebration - Great teaching makes the biggest difference to a child’s education and it’s incredibly important that we take this moment each year to recognise that".
