His Excellency Dr Mohammed Al-Sada, minister for industry and energy of Qatar, paid a recent visit to the South Hook LNG terminal to view the UK end of the Qatargas 2 project.

He was accompanied by Mr Ali Al-Hammadi – chairman of South Hook terminal and Mr Ahmed Al-Khulaifi – Qatargas COO, commercial and shipping.

His Excellency was given an extensive tour of the terminal and its facilities, including a visit to the central control room to see Europe’s largest LNG terminal in operation.

South Hook director and general manager Mohammed Al-Naimi said: “We are delighted to welcome His Excellency to Milford Haven and the South Hook terminal and to be able to have the opportunity to show what has been achieved.

“We are now a commercially operational facility and are glad His Excellency could see for himself the scale and importance of this project for both the UK and Qatar. At full capacity, the terminal will be able to provide up to 20% of the UK’s total gas requirements, which makes it a vital component in the UK’s energy requirements.”

South Hook is part of the broader Qatargas 2 project which has been built to import LNG from the State of Qatar and represents the first western entry point into the UK’s gas transmission system.

Following his tour of the terminal, His Excellency said: “The South Hook terminal is truly a magnificent piece of infrastructure and is a key part of the Qatar government’s desire to be a long-term partner with the UK, especially in the energy sector.

“I was also encouraged to see the level of investment in the local economy made by South Hook in terms of local employment and through their community relations programmes. I am very pleased to see the effort which has been made to ensure that industry can live in harmony with the natural environment.”
