Pembroke Dock will join more than 200 locations around the country in lighting a special beacon to mark the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day today Friday, May 8.

The Beacon produced for VE Day this year has a unique burner head in the shape of V for victory.

More than 200 Beacons will be lit at 9.32pm throughout the UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man, following the lighting of the Principal Beacon outside Windsor Castle by Her Majesty The Queen.

In Pembroke Dock the beacon will be lit at the Defensible Barracks where it should be visible as far as Milford Haven.

It will be lit by the newly installed Mayor of Pembroke Dock Cllr Peter Kraus and the Chairman of PCC Cllr Tom Richards to mark the start of a week of celebrations remembering those who took part in the Second World Ward in Europe on the Home Front and overseas.

Bruno Peek LVO OBE OPR, Pageantmaster of the VE Day 70th Anniversary Beacons said: “VE Day represents a further important milestone in the history of our country.

“It was on this day, 70 years ago, that peace brought an end to nearly six years of war across Europe.

“We must not let this day pass without reflecting on the sacrifice, courage and determination of the people who saw us through a dark period.

“It therefore fitting we should celebrate with the veterans and their families and commemorate this historic anniversary.”

Beacon event organiser for Pembroke Dock, Martin Cavaney said: “It is fitting that Pembroke Dock which played a vital role during World War 2 should be taking part in this National event.”
