THERE was plenty to shout about in Newport at the weekend, as town criers from across England and Wales gathered for an unique event.

The north Pembrokeshire town hosted Wales’ first ever celebration of town criers on Saturday, and the day attracted a procession of colourful characters in fine voice.

Town criers and their consorts were joined by mayors, councillors, and other dignitaries for a parade through the streets and local market, led by the Court Leet Mace Bearer, and were cheered by crowds of spectators as they assembled for the ‘Big Shout’ in the town’s gardens.

Newport’s town crier Mike Mathias was joined by his peers for two shouts above Market Street, below the castle, with music provided by a local choir.

Town criers travelled hundreds of miles from Llandovery, Ilfracombe, Cheltenham Spa, Frome, Crewkerne and Seaton, Trowbridge, Montgomery, Pembroke, Royal Wootten Bassett, Milford Haven and Haverfordwest to take part in the celebration.

Newport mayor Andrew Benham said: “We residents of Newport are very proud to retain a tradition which dates back to Norman times. Historically the town crier was the original news-man. He was protected by law, and ‘do not shoot the messenger’ was an order.”

He added: “This event is a real treat and a rewarding experience. It’s all gone very well.

Mayor Andrew Benham paid tribute to the work of Peter Joignant, who had the initial idea for the event, and Sandra Beard of Llandovery for her assistance.

Mr Benham added: “I would also like to thank all those involved in the planning over the last few months and all those who helped on Saturday, including the ladies who rattled the buckets for the Mayor's charity fund, and those who turned up to show their support.”

Criers introduced their towns during the first shout, followed by a second shout on a more controversial topic which provided entertainment for the audience: “Newport, the jewel in the crown of Pembrokeshire.”

The event was organised by members of Newport Court Leet, supported by Refreshing North Pembrokeshire and Stena, and organisers expressed their gratitude to all those involved in making the event a success.
