AN APPLICATION to build 33 new homes on the site of the former Neyland Primary School and Youth Centre is expected to get the go-ahead from Pembrokeshire council planners on Tuesday, July 31.

The application made by ateb, formerly Pembrokeshire Housing, would see 33 new homes built on the site behind Neyland Health Centre, as well as a new road through the estate with access onto Charles Street, and landscaping.

The school itself closed in 2006, the day centre in 2014, and the youth club in 2015.

The plans will be considered at the July 31 meeting of Pembrokeshire County Council’s planning committee.

The application, conditionally supported by Neyland Town Council, says consultation has taken place with Pembrokeshire county councillors, and the applicant has met with council officers to amend the plans before submitting them.

The town council has requested a grassed area to the side of one of the plots be included in an adjoining recreation area, but a report for planners states the removal of the area from the application is not considered to be necessary.

As well as the 33 homes, there would be parking spaces for 57 cars and 33 bicycles, with “a significant amount of landscaping throughout the site”.

Two letters of objection were received, raising concerns about a loss of open space, traffic, potential asbestos contamination during construction, and about its financial viability.

Concerns were also raised about the impact on the adjoining doctors’ surgery.

The report for planners states: “With regard to the impact of the proposal on the capacity of the adjoining doctors’ surgery, the site is located within a hub town and thus at an optimum location within the county for the provision of services for future occupants of the development.”
