FIVE members of the Pembrokeshire Special Needs Gymnastics Club (PSNGC) will perform on the elite stage this summer after earning national selection.

Jemma Bowie-Hallam, 19, Adele Bevan, 18, Lydia James, 17, Leon Davies, 11, and Josh Critten, 10 - have all been chosen in the Welsh squad for the Special Olympics GB National Games in Sheffield this August.

For Jemma, it will be a third Olympics, and the Portfield School pupil will compete in the Level 2 category.

Adele will be attending the event for the second time, and the Sir Thomas Picton student will compete in the Level 3 category - and Lydia, of Pembrokeshire College, will also compete at Level 3.

Hakin Junior School student Leon, and Hubberston VC pupil Josh, will both compete at Level 1.

The games will run from Monday, August 7, to Friday, August 12, with around 2,600 athletes of all ages and abilities coming together from across the UK to compete.

And selection is just reward for the hard work of the quintet, who train every Thursday at the Meads Leisure Centre in Milford Haven under PSNGC coach Amy Yelland - as well as monthly sessions with the national squad in Cardiff where they are coached by Jeff Savory.

And Amy, who has coached gymnastics for more than 15 years, said she was proud of the five youngsters for their hard work and achievement.

“They have all done really well,” she told Telegraph Sport.

“They are looking forward to it now and I am really excited for them.

“It’s a big event so there is bound to be a few nerves - but I know they will be absolutely fine and hopefully, they can come back to Pembrokeshire with medals.”

The PSNGC has become renowned for its terrific work in local gymnastics, and club secretary Rachel Mathias said she wanted to thank the following for their ongoing sponsorship and support - Milford Haven Town Council, Haverfordwest Town Council, Pembroke Town Council, SemLogistics, Masonic Lodge, the Waterloo Club, and the tesco store in Milford.

The club also undertakes its own fund raising to help with running costs, and currently has a waiting list for new members due the popularity of the club.

Anyone wanting to find out more about the club, or how to go about joining, can contact Rachel on PSNGC@hotmail.co.uk.
