Loo humour

1:51pm Thursday 10th April 2014

DO our representatives on the council realise that their policy of closing public toilets is in direct conflict with the government policy of eating five fruits a day!

No praise

1:50pm Thursday 10th April 2014

THE chief executive of Hywel Dda is shortly to leave his post and the Health Board has been eloquent in their praise. As a Pembrokeshire resident I have to stand up and say that I totally disagree.

No prspects

1:49pm Thursday 10th April 2014

ON behalf of the Members of the Pembrokeshire Prospectors Society, I refer to the article “Are you standing on a priceless hoard” in last week’ edition regarding treasure and metal detecting in Pembrokeshire.

Tried and tested work

1:48pm Thursday 10th April 2014

YOUR article - ‘Beaches report not accurate – charity’ (Western Telegraph, April 2), failed to acknowledge that the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) survey methods have been tried and tested over two decades and are being recommended by the UK Government for adoption by all European countries to monitor the levels of litter to comply with new European Directives to improve environmental quality.

Not a carrot

12:11pm Wednesday 2nd April 2014

WITH regard to the recent budget and in particular savers who have an Isa, an article by the city editor in the Daily Mail on Thursday, March 20, 2014, stated “The jump in the annual limit of how much can be held in an Isa from £11,520 to £15,000 is an increase beyond most savers’ wildest dreams.”

Help needed

12:10pm Wednesday 2nd April 2014

IN REFERENCE to the recent letter from Delyth Evans (Parliamentary candidate for south Pembrokeshire) re: the growth of food banks, I entirely agree with her. I also agree the the comments by the Archbishop of Westminster over the criticism of the government’s policy on derailing benefits to the more vulnerable within our society.

Rising bills

12:08pm Wednesday 2nd April 2014

OUR fuel bills are rising fast, and politicians seem to have little idea what to do about it.

Don't ruin it

10:27am Wednesday 26th March 2014

THE weir in the Mill Bridge was built when fighting the Second World War fires of the oil tanks in Pembroke Dock used up the water supply, leaving none for Pembroke fire fighting.

Many thanks

10:26am Wednesday 26th March 2014

THROUGH your paper we would like to convey the Cardigan Hospital & Community League of Friend Committee’s (LOF) grateful and sincere thanks to everyone who assisted with the recent campaign, run jointly with the Cardigan Town Council, against the closure of the inpatient beds at the Cardigan hospital and for a date to be set for the start on the new hospital which was promised over 25 years ago. The petition presented to the Welsh Office of 11,042 signatures demonstrated the depth of feeling.

Use vote

10:26am Wednesday 26th March 2014

WHILE I appreciate everyone has a right to stand for any party they wish to, be it Labour, Lib Dem, Con or Mickey Mouse, they should have the courage or the convictions and not hide behind the tag of independent to mask a real political mantra to sit on the fence.

Soaring prices

10:25am Wednesday 26th March 2014

AS Mothers’ Day approaches in this month, the flower and chocolate prices will probably soar to cash in on the occasion. Commendable, not the soaring prices, but the need to show your appreciation of your mother.

Is modern really better?

10:35am Wednesday 19th March 2014

HOME improvements? There have been many stories of damage to property in the recent storms but here in Cross Park, Pembroke Dock the damage I can see is somewhat ironic.

Childcare is a huge issue

10:34am Wednesday 19th March 2014

MARK Williams MP called for the Welsh Government to do more on affordable childcare (Western Telegraph, February 26) by following UK Government policy in England. However, he failed to mention the fact that the UK Government has actually cut the financial help with childcare costs for working parents.

'I appreciate even more the kind people that I meet'

10:33am Wednesday 19th March 2014

Please could you help me deliver this open letter to a particular resident in Haverfordwest?

'Night in'

10:32am Wednesday 19th March 2014

I AM writing to you to ask your readers to have a Night In for Macmillan on Friday, May 16.

Shared vision on language

10:31am Wednesday 19th March 2014

I WRITE re your article headlined ‘Calls for Pembrokeshire County Council to “take Welsh seriously”’ in which I find the quoted response of the authority spokesman as being characteristically out of touch with the electorate.

Isolated midwifery unit issue

10:31am Wednesday 19th March 2014

OUR Health Minister, following the advice of the Scrutiny Panel appointed by himself, has decided to impose on Pembrokeshire the Powys maternity model, that is an isolated midwifery unit with no SCBU or consultant obstetric help in the county.

Reflections on day at the Senedd

10:29am Wednesday 19th March 2014

ONCE again I felt proud to be a Pembrokeshire man standing among hundreds of our citizens who had travelled to Cardiff as part of the protest against the downgrading of medical services at Withybush.

For ordinary people here

1:41pm Thursday 13th March 2014

PLEASE, please, please, pease isn’t it time the ordinary people of Pembrokeshire stood up to be counted and let Mr Parry-Jones and his cohorts understand that we want them to work for us and for Pembrokeshire, NOT themselves.

READERS with the George surname may be interested in the following survey which can be found in Fishguard and Pembroke Dock libraries and in archives throughout the Dyfed area.

More not less care needed

1:38pm Thursday 13th March 2014

I THOUGHT we lived in a democracy but it is obvious that Hywel Dda intends to ride roughshod over the ‘ordinary people’.

Decision will come back to haunt you

1:37pm Thursday 13th March 2014

PLEASE find attached below an email which I sent to Mark Drakeford, Health Minister, reference his decision on Withybush SCBU and Maternity Units. I await an answer.

Check the facts on Welsh NHS

1:36pm Thursday 13th March 2014

UNISON continues to be amazed by some of the political claims about the NHS in Wales. We would argue that the reality is somewhat different to some of the headlines we read. Indeed to listen to Tory ministers like Jeremy Hunt people might think that the NHS in Wales had not read, and acted on, reports about patient care such as the review undertaken by Sir Robert Francis on the Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust.

Alien idea

1:35pm Thursday 13th March 2014

FURTHER to the article (Western Telegraph, February 19) about the state of the roads around Haverfordwest, fed up drivers who crave a comfortable drive can now enjoy a super-smooth surface in deepest Pembrokeshire.

Rubbish plan response

1:32pm Thursday 13th March 2014

AS THE county council now seems to have turned its attention away from Brooklands in its recycling scheme, would this now be an appropriate time for it to issue an apology to the owners and staff for the 18 months’ worry and suspense to which they have been subjected, together with the relatives over the possible effects upon their residents?

Basic right to air views

1:30pm Thursday 13th March 2014

I READ with dismay your front page story on February 19 concerning the mockery of democracy at the meeting of the Pembrokeshire County Council.

Act before it's too late

1:30pm Thursday 13th March 2014

I WOULD like to congratulate you for your front page comment (Western Telegraph, February 19). I was appalled at what went on at County Hall, and am growing more and more concerned.

Encouraging support

1:29pm Thursday 13th March 2014

I HAVE been greatly encouraged by the many dozens of phone calls and emails I have received since the county council meeting last Thursday, all of which offered congratulations on my stance against the way Pembrokeshire County Council is being run.

Thank you to the workers

12:41pm Wednesday 5th March 2014

WE HAVE over the past three months experienced the highest rainfall that has ever been recorded and in addition we have had gale force winds even over 100 miles per hour and high sea levels and record high waves.

Quoting from the past

12:39pm Wednesday 5th March 2014

IN light of the recent events, it might be worth reminding ourselves of the words written by John Acton, 1st Baron Acton of Aldenham, in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton dated April 3, 1887: “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

A Chinese proverb

12:36pm Wednesday 5th March 2014

Re: Pembrokeshire County Council WITH reference to the above, I should like to draw your attention to the following: According to my thesaurus, “monitoring” as in monitoring officer means to “observe, watch, scrutinise,”

Equality rule

12:34pm Wednesday 5th March 2014

WILL our council leaders in the interests of equality now allow all its employees to receive the employer’s contribution? This should effectively kill off the Local Government Pension Scheme for ever.

Taking issue on pensions

12:33pm Wednesday 5th March 2014

RE: The pension debate.

12:32pm Wednesday 5th March 2014

FAIR play we all make mistakes.

Crime down by 10% here

12:30pm Wednesday 5th March 2014

WITH overall crime down by 10% since the current government came to office, I am not sure how the Labour MP from Birmingham who recently visited Pembroke Dock, can say that ‘there are disturbing signs of progress in terms of fighting crime starting to be reversed’.

In a parallel universe

12:31pm Wednesday 5th March 2014

IN THE words of Jamie Adams, he clearly believes he provides strong political leadership and Bryn Parry Jones contributes equally strong professional guidance – this, he says, is the bedrock for the success of Pembrokeshire County Council.

Police work something to be proud of

12:29pm Wednesday 5th March 2014

IT WAS disappointing that a Birmingham MP came all the way here (Western Telegraph February 26) to scaremonger about the safety of our community and therefore the performance of our local police.

Government intervention is needed

11:54am Wednesday 5th March 2014

THERE is an urgent need for Welsh Government intervention in the running of PCC.

Leader replies

11:54am Wednesday 5th March 2014

LAST Wednesday, the Western Telegraph ran a front page ‘special comment’ prepared by news editor, Lee Day. I requested a right to reply to his piece and am grateful to the Western Telegraph for agreeing to its publication.

Big thanks

11:52am Wednesday 5th March 2014

I WOULD like to say a very big thank you to the Pembrokeshire County Council staff and officers for the tremendous way in which they handled the major problems that we experienced in Amroth from the morning of Friday January 3. At about 7.30 that morning two council employees were in the village providing sandbags to the sea front premises and as they approached the eastern end, they witnessed the collapse of the road. They immediately took measures to stop all traffic. At 7.45am I contacted the office, by 9.30am we had PCC officers on site to assess the damage and to make roads passable and place diversion signs. By 2pm a machine was at work to make good the sea defences, where it was safe to do so.

Play a part

11:51am Wednesday 5th March 2014

I CONGRATULATE you on your recent front page headline it is both poetic and prophetic - mockery and democracy, it continues with words like farcical, shambolic and embarrassing.

11:50am Wednesday 5th March 2014

I’M marking International Women’s Day (March 8) by committing to walk 10,000 steps a day for a week, in solidarity with women worldwide. I will be joining hundreds of women across the UK taking part in CARE International’s ‘Walk In Her Shoes’ campaign.

Book a seat

11:49am Wednesday 5th March 2014

AGAIN it’s to be hoped all those in Pembrokeshire thankful for Withybush Hospital’s services over the years, and all other folk here who may well have future needs (from cradle to the grave), are concerned enough that many of those services are threatened to be taken far away. If you aren’t booked on one of the many coaches going from all points around Pembrokeshire to the Senedd, Cardiff on Wednesday March 5, please contact Save Withybush Action Team ( SWAT ) on 01437 766215 and book seats now ! Coaches leave 8am for an 11am demo outside the Senedd and leave Cardiff at 4pm.

11:46am Thursday 20th February 2014

THIS year the good people of Laugharne will be celebrating 100 years since the birth of Dylan Thomas, that great Welsh poet who was not born in Laugharne but wrote some of his greatest works in his Boathouse situated above the river Taf estuary.
